With a long history of community and public service, Karen B. Chappelle is an independent Arts Management Consultant and a Producing Artistic Director with Casablanca Consultants in Detroit, Michigan, producing events and festivals that showcase the history and talent of the City of Detroit. After being admitted to the State Bar of California in 1989, Ms. Chappelle joined the California Office of the Attorney General and served the people of California for twenty-five years, retiring in 2014 as a Supervising Deputy Attorney General under former Attorney General Kamala D. Harris.
Ms. Chappelle subsequently served as an Annenberg Community Champion with the Annenberg Foundation’s Alchemy program, a leadership and capacity building program stressing the importance of leadership relationships within nonprofits, as well as critical issues such as effective governance, fundraising, and public accountability. Ms. Chappelle earned her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in 1989, and a BA in Behavioral Psychology from California State University Los Angeles 1984.
Looking to her future beyond the legal profession, and with a deep love of social justice and the arts, Ms. Chappelle returned to graduate school and earned her MBA in Theatre/Theatre Arts Management from Claremont Graduate University in 2014. This decision would further her knowledge and utilize her preexisting talents to more powerfully impact the artistic community. This was a combined Management Program with emphasis on Arts Management theory, finance, and a consultant internship, during which Ms. Chappelle also participated in an exchange program with Bath University in England.
Combining her unique set of attributes, Ms. Chappelle’s thesis was working with a small theatre company approaching their 20 th year anniversary, overseeing the implementation of a new logo design, instituting board training, producing a major fundraiser, and creating and implementing a new program for future artistic growth and sustainability.
